'I absolutely love the original 'la cigale' painting (currently at the NGV) from 1872 but struggled with its traditional "meaning" which was about a poem of a grasshopper and an ant. In the story, the grasshopper begged for more food from the ant as it didn't save any for winter and would starve otherwise.
The woman in this painting is supposed to represent the grasshopper ..
In my reinterpretation, I depict the woman as a mantis seeking revenge on humans who have wronged her. In my Head, her eyes always reflected a sense of revenge and anger.
The eyes of 'La cigale' can be seen in the reflection of the knife's blade.'
