Swimming is easy on a good day when the waters are calm but once a current or a tide comes in that you can't control, no matter how good of a swimmer you might be. They sometimes just come out of nowhere without any warning. Depression is like those tides and currents. 

You're suddenly sucked in, unable to breathe and there is nothing to cling to as you feel yourself being submerged.


Telling someone who is depressed to just “be positive” is like watching a drowning person and yelling from the sidelines, “Just swim! It’ll be ok!”
